Stephanie Robbins

December 13, 2010

Stephanie Robbins visited our class this semester to talk about her work and the work of her students.  She is a photography teacher at Shepard University and likes to have her students focus on what she calls the “Extended Image.”  Stephanie Robbins work doesnt focus primarily on the image, but the presentation of the image and how each viewer will experience it.  She does this by using installations and audio recordings.

When I think about presenting my work, I have always thought to use the traditional mat board or frame…this would make Robbins cringe.  After hearing her reasons behind the “extended image” I think reaching beyond the frame is really interesting and something I would like the try.  Each year her student display their work with installations in some kind of abandoned building.  I feel her ideas are really innovative and inspiring.  In photography it seems almost everything has been done…but after this lecture I learned photography can be viewed and experienced and a totally new and exciting way.
